BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

National Banana transport figures for week 45 were 397,381 cartons which down by 2.2% on the cut for the previous week. Weather patterns in the major growing regions saw less rain this week and warmer temps, particularly in the day with humidity on the increase as well. Temperatures in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures fall within a range of 13.4 - 20.5 C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures ranging 29.3 - 33.6 C. Rainfall in North Qld banana growing regions this week was none existent with: Mareeba and Walkamin receiving 0mm of rain; and Innisfail and Tully regions also with 0mm of rain this week.

Quality is a still varied and there is a visible improvement on the last few weeks - less bat/bird marking; still a little rub marking, and bloom has definitely improved. From our walks around the market and what has been seen on store shelves, we believe the worst of the dull winter fruit has almost come to an end and within the next week, just perhaps we will be saying it is bloomin” bright!

Retail ticket pricing in Queensland for cavendish bananas has remained stable this week with pricing as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $3.99/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.00/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $3.00/kg in the stores visited.

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows

·       Week 45, 2024 - The industry experienced a 1.46% decrease in production on the previous week’s harvest with a total of 521,849 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 7,700 less tray equivalents) on Week 44, 2024 production. It is interesting to note that of this total a little over 81K units were in the form of bulks/processing; 30K units were exported which left just over 410K units for domestic sale.

Production across the country saw WA/NT continue their lead in production - accounting for 63.86% of the total volume, followed by NZ accounting for a further 17.26%, then Central NSW accounting for 12.49%, Tristate with 6.33% and finally Southern Queensland accounting for 0.06% of the total production for the week. Local weather conditions around our growing areas of Manjimup and Pemberton have seen cooler/overcast days this week with temps ranging in the early mornings between 5-9C and days warming up to 18/19C with between 1-11mm of rainfall on a daily basis, which is slowing the harvest task a little. We visited the farms this week and were able to see first hand the impact that the previous summer/mild winter is having on fruit production. Fruit maturity is varied not only between farms but indeed between trees on the same farm; with dry matter results recording consistently high in comparison to other seasons for the same time of year. A number of farms have a percentage of their trees that are shedding fruit (fruit drop) across the region which has prompted some growers to harvest a little more fruit; but other growers are waiting to see if their trees will hold fruit post this “lightening of the load”. The other notable occurrence is the development of tree colour whilst fruit still hanging on the tree - fruit is firm but that renowned varietal purplish/black skin tone. After reviewing and discussing these factors with each of our growers, we will be revising our supply forecast for this season down.

·       It is forecast that a total of some 529,000 tray equivalents will be despatched this week (Week 46) nationally, with the majority of these being hass. Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 442 to 479K tray equivalents per week.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week we saw stable shelf prices as follows - Aldi’s Hass this week shelf tickets at $2.49 each featuring them in their weekly catalogue;  Coles Qld stores visited had Hass avos at $2.50ea, and Woolworths Qld with Hass at $2.50ea.

AVOCADO OVERVIEW

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows

·       Week 44, 2024 - The industry experienced a 4.42% increase in production on the previous week’s harvest with a total of 529,603 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 23,000 more tray equivalents) on Week 43, 2024 production. Despite the fact that this harvest number is stronger, almost 86,000 tray equivalents are only suitable as bulks /processing lines and almost 25,000 trays were exported leaving 419,000 for the domestic market.

Production across the country saw WA/NT continue their lead in production - accounting for 60.57% of the total volume, followed by NZ accounting for a further 18.90%, then Central NSW accounting for 14.60%, Tristate with 5.53% and finally Southern Queensland accounting for 0.41% of the total production for the week. Word on the market is that we should see SA supplies coming to an end late this week or next and once these are exhausted, market agents will be looking to strengthen their floor supplies with fruit from the west. Local weather conditions around the growing areas of Manjimup and Pemberton have seen cooler/overcast days this week with temps ranging in the early mornings between 5-9C and days warming up to 18/19C with between 1-11mm of rainfall on a daily basis, which is slowly the harvest task a little. Apart from the weather impacting volume, a number of farms in WA region are experiencing a degree of fruit drop which seems to be increasing their sense of urgency around harvest. This will no doubt put more pressure on supplies as we move closer to Christmas and if this continues we may be facing the very real possibility of very low supplies post Christmas. The understanding as to why this is occurring across a wide number of farms has been put down to the weather patterns in the preceding 10-12 month period whereby a very hot and lengthy summer have perhaps stressed the trees and hence why they are not holding the fruit for as long as expected.

·       It is forecast that a total of some 503,000 tray equivalents will be despatched this week (Week 45) nationally, with the majority of these being hass. Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 452 to 480K tray equivalents per week.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week we saw stable shelf prices as follows - Aldi’s Hass this week shelf tickets at $1.99 each featuring them in their weekly catalogue;  Coles Qld stores visited had Hass avos at $2.50ea, and Woolworths Qld with Hass at $2.50ea.

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows

·       Week 43, 2024 - The industry experienced a 13.93% increase in production on the previous week’s harvest with a total of 506,197 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 70,000 more tray equivalents) on Week 42, 2024 production. It is interesting to note that of this total approximately 68k tray equivalents were in the form of bulks/processing fruit; 36K were exported which left just over 402K for the domestic market.

Production across the country saw WA/NT lead in production - accounting for 51.81% of the total volume, followed by NZ accounting for a further 25.27%, then Central NSW accounting for 15.94%, Tristate with 5.77% and finally Southern Queensland accounting for 1.21% of the total production for the week. This week we say thank you to our SE Qld grower partner, Cherry Creek Estates, as their season comes to an end and a thank you to our Tristate regions grower partners, Barham Avocados and Murray Eden Avocados as their seasons also come to a close. Avonova is now in full swing with their WA hass harvest and packing programmes, the season is showing signs of being lighter in volume than first anticipated which may mean an earlier finish to the season but supplies will be solid through to Christmas.

·       It is forecast that a total of some 502,000 tray equivalents will be despatched this week (Week 44) nationally, with all of these being hass. Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 450 to 468K tray equivalents per week.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week we saw stable shelf prices as follows - Aldi’s Hass this week shelf tickets at $2.29 each;  Coles Qld stores visited had Hass avos at $2.50ea, and Woolworths Qld with Hass at $2.50ea.

BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

Banana national figures for week 38 have decreased compared to week 37. Week 38 saw a total of 389,799 cartons harvested and transported nationally, a 56,000 decrease in volume or 12.5% less on week 37. Weather patterns in the major growing regions have seen less rain and warmer temps this week. Temperatures in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures fall within a range of 13.0 - 21.5 C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures ranging 27.0 - 32.7 C. warmer than previous weeks. Rainfall in North Qld banana growing regions this week saw Mareeba and Walkamin experience 0mm of rain; and across Innisfail and Tully regions we saw also 0mm of rain this week. Central Markets have been rather messy over the last two weeks with the flush of fruit and falling prices, but with a lighter cut in the last week, this has provided a slight reprieve, so that by late this week, we were starting to see the market tidy up a little.

Retail ticket pricing in Queensland for cavendish bananas has remained stable this week with pricing as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $3.99/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.00/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.00/kg in the stores visited. Independents were selling fruit from $1.99/kg up to $3.99/kg in the centres visited.

AVOCADO OVERVIEW

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows

·       Week 38, 2024 - The industry experienced a 11.95% increase in production on the previous week’s harvest with a total of 489,753 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 50,000 more tray equivalents) on Week 37, 2024 production.

Production across the country saw WA/NT now definitely take the lead in production - accounting for 40.19% of the total volume, followed by Tristate accounting for a further 18.24%, then NZ accounting for 16.11%, CNSW with 14.54% and finally Southern Queensland and TNR with harvests accounting for 8.12% and 1.76% respectively of the total production for the week. In relation to the almost 490K tray equivalents this week approximately 70K were in the form of bulks/processing; a further 36K were exported which left 383K for domestic sale and consumption.

·       It is forecast that a total of some 449,000 tray equivalents will be despatched this week (Week 39) nationally, with the majority of this obviously being hass. Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 437 to 464K tray equivalents per week. We saw Market pricing this week came back a little, still seeing good quality premium fruit fetching up to $40/$42/tray though there was a softening and main sales seemed to be in the range of $36-$38/tray; whilst class one fruit has also come back a few dollars with trays selling $26-$30 - this has in part been caused by a slowing of the market with school holidays in progress in Queensland coinciding with an increase in production.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week we saw stable shelf prices as follows - Aldi’s Hass this week shelf tickets at $2.49 each;  Coles Qld stores visited had Hass avos at $2.50ea, and Woolworths Qld with Hass at $2.50ea. Queensland is coming to the end of the two week September school holiday break - sales during this period have been somewhat slow as has been replicated in the market system, so as we head back to school for the last term of 2024 and head into much warmer weather, we expect to see sales lift. Conversely with the AFL Grand Final this weekend, we see the commencement of the Victorian school holidays whereby we expect a quietening of market sales in this state, for the next two week period.  GO THE LIONS!

Or is it because they are sick of being squeezed??? We have to remind all our customers to gently press around the stem end to determine if an avocado is ready to eat, by squeezing the body we can cause damage to the flesh, in the form of bruising. Colour is also an excellent visual clue as to the condition of the fruit, a dull purple black skin colour is generally associated with a ripe piece.

·       Week 34, 2024 - The industry saw a massive 32.16% increase on the previous week’s harvest with a total of 391,287 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 130,000 more tray equivalents) on Week 33, 2024 production. When we look at this total in a little more detail we see that approximately 82K tray equivalents were in the form of bulks for prepacking/processing; 20K were exported leaving some 289K tray equivalents for domestic sale.

Production across the country saw Central Queensland lead the production table accounting for 25.31% of the total volume, WA/NT accounting for a further 18.78%, followed by Central NSW accounting for 17.19%, Southern Queensland with 11.73% and finally Tristate, North Queensland and NZ with harvests accounting for 11.28%; 10.36% and 4.68% respectively of the total production for the week.

·       It is forecast that a total of some 381,000 tray equivalents will be despatched this week (Week 35) nationally, with the majority of this obviously being hass - which means a similar quantity is expected for domestic supply to last week. Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 320 to 340K tray equivalents per week meaning pressure will still be on supply and pricing is expected to further strengthen within the central market place. In the market this week, Premium fruit is selling for between $38-$42/tray depending upon size; class ones $30-$35 depending upon size and bulks for quality small and mediums $40-$50/carton.

BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

The total national banana harvest figure for Week 33 was 375,803 cartons which was 5.8% increase on the week prior or an additional 20K cartons on Week 32. Weather patterns in the major growing regions are continuing to warm a little and despite a rather constant occurrence of rain we have had somewhat of a reprieve this week. Temperatures in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures fall within a range of 11.3 - 20.8 C across all major growing regions which is a touch warmer than last week; and day time temperatures ranging 22.9 - 30.5 C. Rainfall in North Qld banana growing regions this week saw Mareeba and Walkamin experiencing falls of 1.0 - 5.6mm each; however heavier falls were still being experienced across Innisfail and Tully regions with recordings of up to 70mms! Throw a full moon into the mix and this helps somewhat with growth, especially when we consider the overcast conditions in some of the regions in recent times.

Retail ticket pricing in Queensland for cavendish bananas has remained stable this week with pricing as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $4.49/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.50/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.50-4.90/kg in the stores visited.

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows

·       Week 33, 2024 - The industry saw a massive 36.94% decrease on the previous week’s harvest with a total of 265,419 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 150,000 less tray equivalents) on Week 32, 2024 production. It is important to note that of the 265K tray equivalents harvested in Week 33 - almost 67K were in the form of bulks/processing; another 28K were exported which left only 170K tray equivalents for the domestic market. With supplies down to this level the central markets around the country will be under pressure and prices are expected to be on the rise for all grades.

Production across the country saw North Queensland lead the production table accounting for 26.85% of the total volume, Central NSW accounting for a further 18.88%, followed by Central Queensland accounting for 16.65%, WA/NT with 16.21% and finally Southern Queensland, Tristate and TNR with harvests accounting for 13.74%; 4.26% and 1.24% respectively. With North Qld and Central Qld definitely on the downhill slope of their season in respects to harvests this will mean the other growing regions will steadily increase week on week, but in light of past growing conditions, seasonality and weather events, production in these regions is expected to be down on previous years. In short, this will mean demand will be stronger than supply.

·       It is forecast that a total of some 369,000 tray equivalents will be despatched this week (Week 34) nationally, with the majority of this obviously being hass. Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 296 to 353K tray equivalents per week.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week we saw shelf prices as follows - Aldi’s Hass this week shelf tickets at $1.79 each;  Coles Qld stores visited had Hass avos at $2.50ea, and Woolworths Qld with Hass at $2.50ea.

Temperatures in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures fall within a range of 11.5 - 20.1 C across all major growing regions which is warmer than last week; and day time temperatures ranging 22.3 - 28.1 C. 🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows

·       Week 32, 2024 - The industry saw a 3.14% decrease on the previous week’s harvest with a total of 420,963 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 14,000 less tray equivalents) on Week 31, 2024 production. Whilst this overall production sounds reasonable, it is reflective of stage we are at in relation to NQ and Central Qld with seasons coming to an end and as such there is a lot of farm tidy up occurring hence an increase in the bulks/processing account for 29% of this production (122K tray equivalents) and a reducing export figure of only 33K tray equivalents this week, leaving approximately 265K for the domestic market.

Production across the country saw Central Queensland lead the production table accounting for 49.98% of the total volume, North Queensland accounting for a further 18.79%, then a growing supply from Central NSW accounting for 12.23%, South Queensland with 9.86% and finally WA/NT, TNR and Sunshine Coast with harvests accounting for 5.22%; 1.00% and ~1.00% respectively. With North Qld and Central Qld definitely on the downward trend with respects to production this will mean the other growing regions will steadily increase week on week, though by all accounts, overall production for the NSW and Tristates regions is down on previous years, with the cold winter and numerous frosts not helping this in any way over recent months.

·       It is forecast that a total of some 294,000 tray equivalents will be despatched this week (Week 33) nationally, with the majority of this obviously being hass. Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 265 to 360K tray equivalents per week. North Qld and Central Queensland are finishing their seasons with the last few farms still in harvest mode, expected to wrap up over the next week or two, then our main supply will come from SE Qld followed by the other major growing regions of Victoria, Tri-states and then from October on from WA.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week we saw shelf prices as follows - Aldi’s Hass this week shelf tickets at $1.79 each;  Coles Qld stores visited had Hass avos at $2.00ea, and Woolworths Qld with Hass at $1.80ea.

The weather experience for the last week in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures fall within a range of 12.6 - 18.9 C across all major growing regions which is warmer than last week; and day time temperatures ranging 19.9 - 26.7 C. Most of the North Qld banana growing regions had very minimal rainfall this week with Mareeba and Walkamin experiencing falls of 0-1.2mm; whilst slightly more fell across Innisfail and Tully regions with 24.2mms each. With cool temperatures overnight/early morning, we will also experience a further slowing growth rates, with bunch age still out to 19-20 weeks.

Retail ticket pricing in Queensland for cavendish bananas has remained stable this week with pricing as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $3.99/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.50/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.90/kg in the stores visited.

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows

·       Week 30, 2024 - The industry saw a 8.13% decrease on the previous week’s harvest with a total of 436,720 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 40,000 less tray equivalents) on Week 29, 2024 production.

Production across the country saw Central Queensland resume the lead in production accounting for 58.25% of the total volume, North Queensland accounting for a further 20.16%, then a growing supply from Central NSW accounting for 9.37%, South Queensland with 6.80% and finally WA/NT, TNR and Sunshine Coast with harvests accounting for 2.13%; 1.61% and 1.52% respectively. Whilst North Qld has had a share of the cold weather in the last few weeks, luckily we only have 2-3 weeks more of our NQ season remaining. Our grower partner, Cherry Creek Estates in the SE corner of the state has experienced a few light frosts which has impacted some blocks, overall fruit quality is looking good with a size average of 23 expected - packing is underway - whilst our grower partners located in and around Barham/Cobram have been hit with some icy weather, not just the bitter cold but several frosts have been experienced which has unfortunately caused a percentage of crop damage. Dry matter tests conducted on fruit from 3 year old trees have been gradually improving week on week, with results a week ago reaching harvestable maturity of 23.2%. One of our farms in this regions is looking to commence picking at the end of this week, whilst the others are holding off under later this month before commencement.

We took some time to visit a few of our growers this week in the west, with another trip planned later this month. A number of growers confirmed how dry the weather has been; with many farms greatly in the need of rain - thankfully last week they received 40-50mm, but dams are still in need of more water for the season ahead. Fruit that we saw on trees is looking good, it is sizing nicely with reported dry matter results for younger trees already in the 24-25% dry matter range. ·       It is forecast that a total of some 403,000 tray equivalents will be despatched this week (Week 31) nationally, with the majority of this being hass. Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 292 to 382K tray equivalents per week. North Qld and Central Queensland are expected to continue supplying the majority of available fruit through until early to mid August, even though supply has slowly started to come from the other major growing regions: including Central NSW, Tri-states and WA.

In terms of Avocado retail in the major supermarkets in Qld and WA this week we saw shelf prices as follows - Aldi’s Hass this week holding steady with shelf tickets at $1.99 each;  Coles Qld stores visited had Hass avos at $2.20ea, and Woolworths Qld with Hass at $2.20ea.

BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

National transport figures have shown the bananas harvested in Week 29 to be 377,475 cartons which is approximately 6000 more cartons than what was available in Week 28. Weather patterns, as you no doubt understand have a tremendous impact on production and during the winter months this is very much the case. The weather experience for the last week in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures fall within a range of 4.4 - 19.0 C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures ranging 20.0 - 26.2 C. We haven’t had temperatures as low as 4C in the tropical north for quite some time, so you can expect developing fruit with underpeel discolouration - this is caused by a temporary cessation of sap flow due to the cold resulting in cellular damage in the sub-epidermal layer which results in a greying or dulling of fruit bloom. Most of the North Qld banana growing regions had very minimal rainfall this week with Mareeba and Walkamin experiencing falls of 0-0.6mm; whilst slightly more fell across Innisfail and Tully regions with 11.2-12.8mms. With cool temperatures overnight/early morning, we will also experience a further slowing growth rates, pushing bunch age out to 19-20 weeks.

Retail ticket pricing in Queensland for cavendish bananas has remained stable this week with pricing as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $3.99/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.50/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.00/kg in the stores visited.

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows

·       Week 29, 2024 - The industry saw a 10.02% increase on the previous week’s harvest with a total of 475,346 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 45,000 more tray equivalents) on Week 28, 2024 production. The national harvest included Hass variety supplying the entire 475,346 tray equivalents in this week’s reported figures.

Production across the country saw Central Queensland resume the lead in production accounting for 53.87% of the total volume, North Queensland accounting for a further 30.37%, then a growing supply from Central NSW accounting for 6.30%, South Queensland with 5.10% and finally WA/NT, TNR and Sunshine Coast with harvests accounting for 2.25%; 1.19% and 0.92% respectively. Whilst North Qld has had a share of the cold weather in the last few weeks, the SE corner of the state has as well - whilst our grower partners located in and around Barham/Cobram have been hit with some icy weather, not just the bitter cold but several frosts have been experience with more expected this week which will cause a percentage of crop damage. Whilst in the west of this great country of ours, it has been rather dry with many farms greatly in the need of rain - thankfully they are currently experiencing some relief with a little more rain falling last week and this week but more is needed.

·       It is forecast that a total of some 424,000 tray equivalents will be despatched this week (Week 30) nationally, all of which is expected to be hass. Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 355 to 434K tray equivalents per week. North Qld and Central Queensland are expected to continue supplying the majority of available fruit through until early to mid August, even though supply has slowly started to come from the other major growing regions: including Central NSW, Tri-states and WA. Market pricing seems to be holding steady this week, harvests over the next couple of weeks will further determine the direction of pricing.

BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

Banana industry transport figures for fruit harvested in Week 28 indicate minimal change on Week 27 with a total of 371,916 cartons harvested nationally. The weather patterns for the last week in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures fall within a range of 9.4 - 16.3 C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures ranging 24.6 - 28.7 C. Most of the North Qld banana growing regions had very minimal rain this week with Mareeba and Walkamin experiencing falls of 0-0.2mm; whilst 0-0.4mms fell across Innisfail and Tully regions. With cool temperatures overnight/early morning, we will no doubt continue to see the impact on fruit bloom and also resulting in slower growth rates, pushing bunch age out. This winter to date, has sent a number of colder mornings early in the season, combined with overcast days, which has taken us a little by surprise, particularly in relation to our ladyfinger crop, fruit is taking longer fill out and as such we have seen a staggering reduction in our weekly crop harvest figures by some 70-75% - it is expected this pattern will continue through until at least mid to late August.

Retail ticket pricing in Queensland for cavendish bananas has remained stable this week with pricing as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $3.99/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.00/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $3.99/kg in the stores visited.

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows

·       Week 28, 2024 - The industry saw a 5.44% increase on the previous week’s harvest with a total of 427,726 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 23,000 more tray equivalents) on Week 27, 2024 production. The national harvest included Hass variety supplying 423,242 tray equivalents along with 4,484 trays of assorted other varieties in this week’s reported figures. We should note that of this total volume some 129K tray equivalents were in the form of bulks for prepacking/processing and 53K tray equivalents were exported which left a little over 245K tray equivalents for the domestic market.

Production across the country saw Central Queensland resume the lead in production accounting for 57.66% of the total volume, North Queensland accounting for a further 33.80%, then a growing supply from Southern Queensland accounting for 4.64%, WA/NT with 1.84% and finally CNSW, TNR and Sunshine Coast with harvests accounting for 1.29%; 0.40% and 0.38% respectively.

·       It is forecast that a total of some 451,000 tray equivalents will be despatched this week (Week 29) nationally, all of which is expected to be hass. Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 400 to 410K tray equivalents per week. North Qld and Central Queensland are expected to continue supplying the majority of available fruit through until early to mid August, even though supply has slowly started to come from the other major growing regions: including Central NSW, Tri-states and WA. It is worth noting, that our grower partners located in SE Qld and in Victoria/Tri-states growing regions have all been experiencing very cold overnight/early morning temps, some have had frosts for several mornings in a row and are seeing the a percentage of their crop suffering frost damage and slowing growth rates - the most recent fruit maturity test results from the southern regions are still a way from being ready for harvest with readings of 21 to 21.3% this week.

In terms of Avocado retail in the major supermarkets in Qld and Adelaide this week we saw shelf prices as follows - Aldi’s Purpleskin and Avolution Hass this week with shelf tickets at $1.79 each;  Coles Qld stores visited had Rock Ridge Hass avos at $2.20ea, and Woolworths Qld with Purpleskin and Australian Produce Partners (Howe Farming) supplied Hass at $2.00 - $2.20ea depending upon store visited. BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

Banana industry transport figures for fruit harvested in Week 27 saw a result just marginally smaller than Week 26 production at 372,684 cartons nationally. The weather patterns for the last week in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures fall within a range of 13.6 - 20.7 C across all major growing regions, a touch warmer than last week; and day time temperatures have also remained warmer ranging 21.5 - 26.3 C but with overcast skies and rainfall. Most of the North Qld banana growing regions had rain this week with Mareeba and Walkamin experiencing falls of 0.8-5.3mm and 131 - 182mms fell across Innisfail and Tully regions. With overcast skies and cool temperatures overnight, we will continue to see the impact on fruit bloom and also resulting in slower growth rates pushing bunch age out.

Banana quality has started to be impacted by the activity of birds/bats across the growing regions. This shouldn’t come as a surprise at this time of year, with the seasonality of plants and colder weather, normal flowering/blossoming plants are less productive and regrettably the birds and bats are drawn to our banana plants. Whilst the practice of bagging helps to protect the fruit from scratching to some extent, it does not provide full protection. Another shortcoming of winter is that with the cooler/overcast days we expect to seeing a dulling of fruit bloom, this is noticeable in stores, to varying degrees, and can be expected through until at least November.

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows

·       Week 27, 2024 - The industry saw a 3.63% decrease on the previous week’s harvest with a total of 404,437 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 15,000 less tray equivalents) on Week 26, 2024 production. The national harvest included Hass variety supplying 399,730 tray equivalents along with 4,707 trays (inc GMax) of assorted other varieties in this week’s reported figures. It is worthwhile noting that of the 404,437 tray equivalents: some 124K came in the form of bulks for prepacking and processing; 55K were exported leaving 224K for domestic sale.

Production across the country saw North Queensland in the lead in production accounting for 49.67% of the total volume, Central Queensland accounting for a further 42.44%, then trickles from Southern Queensland accounting for 4.26%, Central NSW with 1.42% and finally WA/NT, Sunshine Coast and TNR for 1.21%; 0.69% and 0.32% respectively.

·       It is forecast that a total of some 409,000 tray equivalents will be despatched this week (Week 28) nationally. This figure can be broken down by variety with the Hass to contribute approximately 409,000 tray equivalents of this total and some 100 tray equivalents of other varietals (inc GMax) of this total. Production figures for the next two to three period after this week are forecast to be reducing in volume from 396K down to 330K tray equivalents per week, including bulks/export/domestic volumes.

In terms of Avocado retail in the major supermarkets in Qld and Adelaide this week we saw shelf prices as follows - Aldi Hass this week with shelf tickets at $1.79 each;  Coles Qld stores visited had Hass avos at $1.90ea, and Woolworths Qld with Purpleskin and Simpson supplied Hass at $2.00ea and GMAX (Qld stores only) avos (larger sizes 14/16/18) at $2.90ea. A number of the Gmax this week were found to have lenticel damage and were starting to show signs of breakdown.
