BANANA OVERVIEW

The National Banana transport figures for week 40 were a little over 417,000 cartons which is some 57,000 more, than harvested in week 39. Weather patterns in the major growing regions have seen minimal rain again and temps this week have remained warm. Temperatures in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures fall within a range of 14.6 - 20.8 C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures ranging 25.2 - 32.7 C. Rainfall in North Qld banana growing regions this week was again light with Mareeba and Walkamin experiencing 0mm of rain; and across Innisfail and Tully regions there was only 7.4-7.8mm of rain this week.

Quality is a little mixed - seeing evidence of some light bird/bat marking and some rub marking in particular; bloom is improving, however there is still a percentage of dull fruit in the market.

Retail ticket pricing in Queensland for cavendish bananas has remained stable this week with pricing as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $3.99/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.00/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.00-4.50/kg in the stores visited.

AVOCADO OVERVIEW

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows: 

·       Week 40, 2024 - The industry experienced a 16.50% decrease in production on the previous week’s harvest with a total of 413,499 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 80,000 less tray equivalents) on Week 39, 2024 production. This production figure can be broken down into 68.5K bulks/processing lines; almost 47K tray equivalents were exported which left some 301K tray equivalents for the domestic market.

Production across the country saw WA/NT now firmly take the lead in production with both hands - accounting for 44.41% of the total volume, followed by NZ accounting for a further 18.05%, then Central NSW accounting for 17.33%, Tristate with 14.34% and finally Southern Queensland and TNR with harvests accounting for 3.85% and 1.68% respectively of the total production for the week.

·       It is forecast that a total of some 416,000 tray equivalents will be despatched this week (Week 41) nationally, with the majority of these obviously being hass. Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 393 to 422K tray equivalents per week.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week we saw stable shelf prices as follows - Aldi’s Hass this week shelf tickets at $2.49 each;  Coles Qld stores visited had Hass avos at $2.50ea, and Woolworths Qld with Hass at $2.50ea.

  • Cavendish Bananas priced at $3.99/kg. Some with minor bruising and splitting peel as well as some discolouration.

  • Havana Bananas also at $3.99/kg.

  • Cavendish on display $4.00/kg. Kids packs at $4.00/kg.

  • Red Tips $5.50/kg, Lady Fingers $6.90/kg and Organic at $6.50/kg.

COLES GARDEN CITY

  • Cavendish on display $4.00/kg. Kids packs at $4.00/kg. Minimal marking.

  • Red Tips at $5.50/kg. Lady Fingers at $6.90/kg.

COLES FOREST LAKE

  • Cavendish on display for $4.00/kg, somewhat a jumbled display.

  • Off location display of the Kids Bananas $4.00/pack, Ladyfingers $6.90/kg but only one small cluster and Red Tips at $5.50/kg which presented well.

  • Organic bananas were located with other organic product lines and were ticketed at $6.50/kg.

  • Cavendish priced at $4.00/kg. Appropriately positioned in ‘Eat Now’ and ‘Eat Later’. Kids packs at $3.00ea.

  • Red Tips at $5.50/kg. Lady Fingers at $8.00/kg. Organic at $6.50/kg.

WOOLWORTHS GARDEN CITY

  • The display of Cavendish priced at $4.50/kg. Appropriately displayed. Kids packs at $3.00ea.

  • Red Tips at $5.50/kg, Lady Fingers at $8.00/kg and Organic at $6.50/kg.

WOOLWORTHS ACACIA RIDGE

  • Cavendish priced at $4.00/kg, odd cluster found with bat damage. Kids packs at $3.00ea.

  • Red Tips at $5.50/kg. Lady Fingers at $8.00/kg- a few clusters found that were very backward. Organic at $6.50/kg.

  • 1kg prepacks at $7.49ea and 5 piece packs at $7.49ea.

  • Darling Avocado Count 23/25 Hass Avocados, priced at $2.49 each.

  • Prepacks also on display - 1kg packs and 5 piece packs at $7.49ea.

  • Skylark NZ Hass Avocados primarily found on the display - ticketed at $2.50 ea. Fruit packed 12th Sept, therefore fruit age is up to 26 days old.

  • Prepacks - 5 piece packs and 1kg packs $8.00ea.

COLES FOREST LAKE

  • NZ Hass loose, $2.50 ea - a little sun blemish noticed.

  • Avocado 5pk and Avocado 1kg I’m Perfect both selling at $8.00ea

  • Organic Avocados located with other organic lines ticketed at $3.80ea

  • NZ Hass in Count 20 on display priced at $2.50ea were on the the A frame display. Fruit packed 16th Sept therefore fruit age is up to 22 days old.

  • Prepacks: 1kg prepacks at $8.00ea. 5 piece packs at $8.00ea.

WOOLWORTHS GARDEN CITY

  • Mix of Central NSW, WA and NZ Hass Counts 16-25; selling at $2.50ea. Fruit packed dates range 13th to 24th September therefore age ranges 14 to 25 days.

  • 1kg Odd Bunch and 5 piece packs both at $8.00ea.

WOOLWORTHS ACACIA RIDGE

  • WA and NZ Hass in Count 20-25 on display priced at $2.50ea were on the front of an A frame display. Strip signage talks about QLD Grown Hass which is not relevant. Fruit packed dates range from 13th Sept through to 25th Sept meaning fruit age ranges 13 to 25 days old.

  • Prepacks: 1kg prepacks at $8.00ea. 5 piece packs at $8.00ea. Also mini organic packs containing between 6 and 7 pieces per net - a few of which had strong sun colour blemish selling for $7.90/bag.
