National Banana transport figures for week 12 were just shy of 428,000 cartons which was 15.2% less than the week prior which equates to 77,000 cartons fewer! Weather patterns in the major growing regions were as follows: Temperatures in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures fall within a range of 21.0-24.5C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures still ranging 25.0-35.4C. Heavy rainfalls were again experienced in North Qld banana growing regions this week with the following recorded: Mareeba receiving 103.2mm for the week; and Innisfail receiving a massive total of a 319.2mm!!! We are hoping the rain eases soon.

Quality is somewhat varied both in terms of fruit colour and degree of skin marking, also seeing a little sooty mould around which is not uncommon with the kind of weather we have been experiencing.

Retail ticket pricing in Queensland for cavendish bananas were as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $4.49/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.90/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at a huge range from $4.50/kg in the stores visited.

AVOCADO OVERVIEW

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows: 

·       Week 12, 2025 - The industry experienced a tiny 0.3% decrease in production on the previous week’s harvest with a total of 429,578 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 1,000 less tray equivalents) on Week 11, 2025 production.

Production across the country saw NQ still confidently leading in production - accounting for 71.34% of the total volume, followed by Central Queensland accounting for 28.42%, then Central NSW for 0.24% of the total production for the week.

·      It is forecast that a total of some 497,000 tray equivalents will be dispatched this week (Week 13) nationally, with the majority of these being Shepard!! Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 367K-456K tray equivalents per week.

Market pricing on Shepards has remained fairly stable despite some increase in volumes this week with sales of premium trays ranging $32-$38 depending upon size (main sales $34-$36); whilst class one trays are selling for $25-$30 depending upon size and quality. We saw some early Hass produced by Purpleskin on the Melbourne market this week - some light nodule damage visible on these premium 18’s pictured below. Packed 20th March. We expect to see a gradual increase in the volume of hass arriving into the central markets from next week.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week we saw some great offers for customers with pricing as follows - Aldi’s Hass this week shelf tickets on special at $2.29each;  Coles Qld stores visited had Shepard and Autumn Hass avos at $2.00ea, and Woolworths Qld with Shepard at $2.30ea.

  • Greenskins Shepards Ct 23-25 Shepard were well stocked, priced $2.50ea - quite a number of pieces with rots developing - both loose and in prepack form. Stock with packed dates of 4-6th March meaning fruit was 20-22 days old.

  • Prepacks: 1kg packs at $8.90ea. 5 piece packs $6.90ea on special.

WOOLWORTHS WESTEND

  • Greenskins Shepards Ct23-25 on display priced at $2.30ea were on the the A frame display. Again packed dates of 4th and 5th March so fruit age up to 22 days from date of pack. A few pieces found with bruising/body rots but fewer than Yerongpilly.
