BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

Banana industry transport figures for fruit harvested in Week 26 were some 373K cartons a reduction by 2.69% or some 10K cartons fewer than the week prior. The weather patterns for the last week in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures dropping with a range of 14.6 - 17.8 C across all major growing regions, a touch warmer than last week; and day time temperatures have also remained warmer ranging 25.0 - 26.4 C. There has been very minimal rainfall across most of the North Qld banana growing regions again this week with Mareeba and Walkamin 0.1mm falls and only of 2 - 4mms across Innisfail and Tully regions - these patterns are usual for this time of the year.

Retail ticket pricing in Queensland for cavendish bananas has remained stable this week with pricing as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $3.99/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.00/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.00/kg in the stores visited. Banana quality and fruit bloom in stores still varied, as a result of the current varying weather conditions for Winter NQ growing season!

AVOCADO OVERVIEW

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows

·       Week 26, 2024 - The industry saw a 5.16% decrease on the previous week’s harvest with a total of 419,352 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 20,000 less tray equivalents) on Week 25, 2024 production. The national harvest included Hass variety supplying 394,605 tray equivalents along with 3,180 Shepard tray equivalents together with 21,567 trays (inc GMax) of assorted other varieties in this week’s reported figures.

Production across the country saw Central Queensland maintain just in the lead in production accounting for 47.37% of the total volume, North Queensland accounting for a further 46.14%, then trickles from Southern Queensland accounting for 3.79%, Central NSW with 1.17% and finally TNR, Sunshine Coast and WA/NT for 0.63%; 0.46%; 0.44% respectively.

·       It is forecast that a total of some 444,000 tray equivalents will be despatched this week (Week 27) nationally. This figure can be broken down by variety with the Hass to contribute approximately 439,000 tray equivalents of this total and some 5,000 tray equivalents of other varietals (inc GMax) of this total. The focus continues to be upon the popular Hass varietal. Production for the next two to three week period is expected to be reducing from 428K down to 366K tray equivalents/week. The markets have seen price continuing to firm for premium graded trays; whilst class one fruit seems to be holding steady this week; with industry supplies forecast to be lighter in volume over the next three week period, pressure will remain on pricing for good quality fruit.

In terms of Avocado retail in the major supermarkets in Qld and Adelaide this week we saw shelf prices as follows - Aldi Hass this week with shelf tickets at $1.49 each;  Coles Qld stores visited had Hass avos at $2.00ea whilst in Adelaide Hass avocados were ticketed at $1.80ea, and Woolworths Qld with Purpleskin and Simpson supplied Hass at $1.80ea and GMAX (Qld stores only) avos (larger sizes 14/16/18) at $2.50-$2.90ea whilst the Adelaide store frequented had Avolution supplied Hass in Ct23/25 also retailing at $1.80/piece.
