In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows

·       Week 42, 2024 - The industry experienced a 1.23% increase in production on the previous week’s harvest with a total of 435,683 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 5,000 more tray equivalents) on Week 41, 2024 production.

Production across the country saw WA/NT now firmly take the lead in production with both hands - accounting for 55.99% of the total volume, followed by Central NSW accounting for a further 18.87%, then NZ accounting for 13.09%, Tristate with 10.01% and finally Southern Queensland and TNR with harvests accounting for 1.95% and 0.10% respectively of the total production for the week.

·       It is forecast that a total of some 403,000 tray equivalents will be despatched this week (Week 43) nationally, with the majority of these obviously being hass. Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 406 to 451K tray equivalents per week. The central markets continued to firm in price a little as some regions are now finished their harvests with a further lift by $1-$2/tray expected in next’s trade. Pricing is varied and quality it key.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week we saw stable shelf prices as follows - Aldi’s Hass this week shelf tickets at $2.29 each;  Coles Qld stores visited had Hass avos at $2.50ea, and Woolworths Qld with Hass at $2.50ea.

  • Coles stores had Hass in size 20-25 at $2.50ea. The majority of fruit had colour, some sun blemish noted.

  • 5 piece packs at $8.50ea and 1kg packs at $8.00ea. Organic at $3.80ea.

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

National harvest figures for week 42 were 430,341, an increase on week 41 of 18,600 cartons. Weather patterns in the major growing regions have seen a less rain this week and temps are gradually lifting during the day each week and humidity too. Temperatures in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures fall within a range of 14.1 - 21.9 C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures ranging 29.2 - 33.3 C. Rainfall in North Qld banana growing regions this week was as follows: Mareeba and Walkamin 0mm of rain; and Innisfail and Tully regions 2.0-4.4mm of rain this week.

Quality remains quite mixed across the board - with rub marking, thrip damage, bat/bird damage evident in a number of displays; however bloom is improving with each passing week.

Retail ticket pricing in Queensland for cavendish bananas has remained stable this week with pricing as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $3.99/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.00-4.50/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.00/kg in the stores visited.

  • Cavendish were priced at $4.00/kg. Also at $4.00/kg were the kids packs.

  • Red Tips at $5.50/kg. Lady Fingers at $6.90/kg (a few very tiny clusters). Organic at $6.50/kg.

  • Most blooms were relatively good though a mix of duller fruit is present.

Stores had Cavendish @ $3.99/kg. Most with good colour, some minimal marking.

  • Havana Bananas back in some stores this week at $3.99/kg - good colour mostly, some stores with green fruit.

  • Woolworths had Cavendish bananas priced at $4.00-4.50/kg, Lil Sana kids banded clusters at $3.00.

  • Red tips were at $5.50/kg and Organic Clusters at $6.50/kg. Ladyfingers were $8/kg.
