BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

Industry transport figures for the previous harvest ie week 24 was 381,245 ctns which represents a drop of some 25,000 cartons on Week 23 harvest. The weather patterns for the last week in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures dropping with a range of 9.0 - 14.5 C across all major growing regions and day time temperatures have remained warmer ranging 24.2 - 29.5 C. With temperatures starting to dip below 10C we have seen the occurrence of some underpeel discolouration, will only be mild at this stage but if we experience repeated cold days this is when the damage becomes heightened. There has been very minimal rainfall across most of the North Qld banana growing regions this week with Mareeba and Walkamin 0.2mm falls and only of 0 to 0.8mms across Innisfail and Tully regions - this pattern is expected at this time of year.

Retail ticket pricing in Queensland for cavendish bananas has remained stable this week with pricing as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $3.99/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.00/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.00/kg in the stores visited. Banana quality in stores still varied, some stores having more significant damage on the varieties other than cavendish.
